Connor’s New Shirt

April 2023

Connor and his mum, Tara, staff the kitchen at home matches. As well as keeping the fans supplied with hot and cold drinks, burgers and chips, they cook a hot meal for players, referees and officials of both clubs. We would struggle to manage without them.

We just gave him his team polo shirt: he seems pleased!

I have a lot to learn about portraits. I’m pretty sure that a portrait photographer would have made more of this. Still, it seems to capture his beaming pride in his Freddie the Phoenix finery. So that’ll do for now.

This was taken with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and the EF 100-400 IS2, which is my main setup for footie. I didn’t alter the settings I had for the match - F8, 1/1000th sec with auto ISO. If I’d noticed that the ISO was up to 10000, I might have opened the aperture and used a slower speed. Still, I think I got away with it. Some will look at the amount of noise in the shirt and disagree.

Processed in Lightroom Classic. This was my first experiment with masking, slightly reducing the background saturation, exposure and contrast. I’m unconvinced about this, but I don’t think I did TOO much damage.
